Works as advertised. Nice unit!

Date:February 11, 2012

I received the unit about 30-days ago. I was immediately impressed with the packaging used for shipping. Very elegant and protective. The unit was easy for me to install. The window adapter is nice and they provide enough material to use vertically in a sliding glass door. I had to trim mine to get it to fit my window. I thought it was strange that the instructions did not mention that trimming could be necessary. I have my unit in an un-insulated garage. My primary intention is for the unit to help keep a recently restored antique car at a more constant temperature. I have not received an electric bill yet so I cannot comment on the efficiency. I do know that the unit does not run constantly so hopefully it is efficient. Overall a good purchase for the money so far.

I haven't had the AC very long so I can't say about the energy It uses yet. I like it so far. If it holds up, I think it's a good deal and will probably buy another one to work along side this one in my shop.

Great Purchase

Living in the SouthWest and recent temperatures of 100+ put a major strain on our outdoor pets. After placing the newly purchased 14,000 btu in the garage helped reduce the garage temperature from 110'f to below 90'f.
This was adequate enough for the dogs and made them comfortable during this heat wave.

So easy to set up. The rollers make this a truly portable unit. The performance is as as advertised and as I expected. I would recommend this unit to anyone. I use it in my garage but then on a porch during my recovery from a recent surgery. So easy to transition from one space to another. The remote control is very handy. Very attractive, fits in nicely where we use it. Great price, delivered as promised.

Works Great

Date:August 11, 2011
Best Uses: Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling
We have a very large livingroom and this air conditioner keeps the room at a reasonable temperature - 80 degrees when it is almost 100 degrees outside. I like the quality of the air produced - the humidity vanishes and it is a dry 80 degrees. In a smaller room, I am sure it would reduce the temperature even more. We are very happy with this product and would easily recommend it.

Great Customer Service, and a Good Product

Date:August 7, 2011
Best Uses: Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling
We are located in the Houston Area. It has been really HOT this past summer, and we are now in Hurricane Season. We purchased this AC unit to work with our small Generator (6,000 watts), when we lost electric during a storm, so we wouldn't die in the 100+ degree heat.
To Begin: Living Direct / Compact Appliance (CA) provides Terrific Service, and is a great company to do business with. The first unit we purchased was dropped by FedEx in Transit, and when it arrived the Refrigerant Lines were damaged and the coolant leaked out all over the interior of the packaging. A real mess. We immediately called CA, and they issued a FedEx Call Tag to pick up the damaged unit. Once FedEx picked up the unit, CA shipped us out another unit. The replacement unit arrived in perfect condition.
NOTE: Things do happen in transit, so unpack your unit carefully, with a mind toward having to repack it up for the return trip.
We built a custom insulated panel to fit into a sliding glass door opening, and mounted the dual hoses to this custom panel utilizing the plastic attachment panel that came with the unit. Our custom installation method worked well.
One problem we ran into, was that the two hoses utlize a built-in plastic clip arrangement to attach the hoses, both to the AC unit, and also the Window Mounting Unit. The clips work well to hold the hose in place, however, removing the hoses is almost impossible because the built-in plastic clips do not bend easily to release the hose. I had to modify the clips slightly to get them to work more easily, yet still hold the hoses in place. (However, we opted to leave the hoses attached to the AC unit permanently due to this problem.) These minor glitches are of no importance, just a side note. The key is -- How does the unit work.
Per the instructions, we hooked up both hoses and vented them outside. We started the unit up, and it worked perfectly. During our test run, the outside air temperature was 104 Degrees. The space we were trying to cool included a 475 sq.ft. Den/Dining/Kitchen area (an open floor plan), and a separate 300 sq.ft. Bedroom/Bath area. This total space (775 sq.ft.) represented about 1/2 the total living space of the house, However, we closed off the rest of the house to avoid excessive square footage that was beyond the capacity of the unit.
We turned off our Central AC, and turned on the EdgeStar 14,000. We used a precision temperature probe to check the temperatures throughout the air conditioned space. We normally keep our temperature at about 76 degrees (to conserve energy).
We ran the EdgeStar throughout the entire day. The temperature started off at 76 degrees, and by 7pm that evening (and throughout the heat of the day), it only rose to 78 degrees. The separate bedroom and bath area was about 2 degrees warmer. But, considering the 104 degree outside temperature, we couldn't be more thrilled.
In addition, we measured the air temperature right at the discharge vent of the air stream, at the top of the unit, and it maintained a steady cool 52 to 55 degree temperature throughout the day.
We couldn't be more pleased with the results. We feel we are now prepared to weather our next hurricane, with a reasonable degree of comfort.
Its a nice unit, and works well. But, keep in mind, its only 14,000 btu's, and has its limitations when used in larger spaces.

Love love love

Date:August 4, 2011
I love my portable a.c. It works well, even though the room it is in is open to other rooms. I do have to use the overhead fan to help distribute the cold but it works! The window adapter kit is not as sophisticated as I'd like - fits loosely so I'll need to add some weather stripping. But any little adjustment that I have to make pales to the main theme: I can be as cool as I want even when the afternoon sun tries to cook my living room. Well worth the reasonable price. I haven't seen my power bill yet so I don't know how much it costs to run it. But before I had it, I couldn't get anything done - I work at home. So it pays for itself in productivity. As my title says, love love love.

Best Uses: Garage / Shed cooling
I bought this unit for my garage that is about 650 sq ft. I spend a lot of time on projects in the garage and needed a break from the Texas heat this summer (it's late July and we've already had 30 days at or above 100 degrees). I looked a LOT of units before I bought this one, and boy am I glad I found this one. I needed the full size. It is cooling the garage to about 85 degrees, which is quite substantial (you can never plan on cooling more than about 20 degrees lower than ambient temperature... it just doesn't happen in the real world).
Installation would have been a breeze if I had a window, but there's not one in the garage. So, I used the mounting plates (included) and made a template. The hoses are 5" diameter, not the standard 4" dryer hose. With one trip to the local hardware store to get two 4" external dryer vent flappers and two 5"-to-4" sheet metal adapters (plumbing section) so I could mount the plate to an external wall, I was set for install. I simply cut through the wall (making sure there's no electrical or studs in the way), mounted the adapters, vent flappers and the mounting plates.
What they don't tell you are a few important things:
1) This unit pulls a full 10+ amps when the compressor is on. Unless you're on a dedicated circuit, I would HIGHLY recommend that you place it on a 20amp breaker circuit. I tried in on a 15amp with other things also on the circuit and it kept tripping the breaker. So, I move it to my clothes dryer circuit (using an extension cord) and it worked fine. But, DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION CORD THAT IS NOT RATED FOR 20 AMPS! The extension I used was a standard outdoor (grounded) cord, but it was really getting warm. The next day, I installed a separate outlet next to it (not shown in pictures) that was also for my dryer, which is a 20amp circuit. (so far, no problems running both simultaneously).
2) Also, while they mention the second hose, it's not apparent what it's for. I thought it was for more exhaust air to the outside to make it more efficient for cooling, but that's not the case! It's a supply air hose for outside for efficiency. That will be good for heating, but when it's 105 degrees outside, it defeats the purpose! You can see in the picture that I have the second hose laying on top of the unit, next to the vents. I did this so some of the cool air coming out of the vent would get pulled back into the unit to increase the cooling efficiency. This seems to allow about another 1-2 degrees lower room temperature (but that's not a scientific number).
Also shown is a picture of the outside vents I installed. Notice that the exhaust vent is wide open (unit is running). The only thing I'll have to do in the fall is to take off the upper vent, install a screen, and then reinstall it and prop open the upper vent. Why? Because it's an air INTAKE, and it won't draw air in unless the vent is open, and it swings the wrong way. The screen is necessary to keep bugs and animals out. It'd really stink to have a mouse, bird or snake in your unit!
3) This unit runs about 9-10 hours a day, and I have only once seen some water on the concrete floor. I am sure that it's because on that one day, I had the garage door open as well, and was pulling in a substantial amount of humidity. If you're in a high humidity area, I would recommend adding a drain hose to the outside. I'll probably do this and just let it lay on the ground and snake it around the corner of the metal garage door (so I don't have to cut any more holes).
4) Additional air movement. The unit provides really cold air coming out of the top, but since it's not oscillating it only does 'okay'. (In an interior room, I think it'd do fine). You can see in the picture that I placed a tower oscillating fan next to it, which moves the air around the garage quite nicely and adds to the comfort of the unit in this harsh application.
All in all, a GREAT product. I'd highly recommend it, and would buy another if I needed it.

Cools Great

Date:July 26, 2011
Best Uses: Garage / Shed cooling, Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling, Office/commercial cooling, Kitchen cooling
This unit does an excellent job of cooling the 14' by 12' room it was intended for. The only real problem is the included, rickety 3-piece window sealer. My window opens vertically so the two ventilation tubes need to exit the bottom of the window, but the three plastic pieces fit together in such a way as to force the tubes to exit 3' above the window sill. Installed it is ugly and annoying. I'm going to have to hire someone to build a suitable and more substantial window sealer.

Excellent Airconditioner

Date:July 15, 2011
I have had other portable airconditioners, and they did not work as well as this make. The unit is made well and works great. I had done a lot of research before buying this model as you are and read a lot of opions, I find the unit runs cold and is not noisey. I would reccomend this unit. I am running it in a basement where it was very humid and hot. This unit is cooling down the whole basement.

the right stuff

Date:July 10, 2011
Best Uses: Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling
We looked on line and at the local stores that carried this type cooler as we live in a rented duplex. The air conditioning here is not the greatest but try and tell that to the landlord. Right. Anyway our cooler is the best one out there(my opinion). We have it in our bedroom and it is the best! We live in Kansas and so its some what humid here so we don't use the dehumidifier. It just fills the container too fast. But I will use it at night (twice). It will shut down when the container gets full automatically. This is done while we sleep and by morning it really doesn't matter. I usually turn it off early morning because it has more than served its purpose for the night. If you have a room that needs cooled and that you can contain the cool... get this one you will not be sorry. Oh! I built a little 6 inch high box to set it on for those times that I need to drain the container. Even though I have only used it twice I think that I will use it tonight it relly does a different type cool but I like to reserve that you know for a change. If you cant make something then just don't use the dehumidifier you will be just fine. I went further and sealed all the vents with silicone. I work in an aircraft factory so I always have to go further from what I put togetherI look forward to the winter to try thr heater. Thanx EdgeStar. xxoo

EdgeStar Extreme Cool 14,000 BTU Portable Air Cond

Date:June 20, 2011
Best Uses: Living Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling
This unit is being used in an 800 square foot cabin with a cathedral ceiling, located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. I have the Edge Star unit installed at one end of the living area in an attempt to moderate the temperature throughout. The area includes a kitchen/dinette area, laundry room and living room. On a recent 95 degree day, the Edge Star unit was capable of lowering the temperature in this area to the low 80's. It was necessary, however, to cap the air intake opening of the intake/exhaust plate situated in the window, and instead, draw pre-cooled air from the living area. It was only after this adjustment in air intake, with the addition of a fan helping to circulate the cooler air throughout, that the unit was able to function as efficiently as it did. I gave the unit 5 stars in all categories because it's being used beyond it's efficiency rating and performing adequately in spite of it. If the unit was used in accordance with it's square foot rating, it would be more than adequate. It's well designed, attractive to look at and is farily simple to set up and operate.
