Works better than expected 24x7x365

Date:May 15, 2012
Best Uses: Garage / Shed cooling, Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling, Office/commercial cooling, Whole house cooling
What I needed was a server room unit to cool a home office 24x7x365 where a firewall, multiple managed switches, multiple 1U-sized servers, a massive 3U-sized RAID unit and a fiber channel switch in a 12U rack along with multiple heavy-duty 2200VA UPS units plus multiple tower workstations were located. The built-in window unit in the home office was overwhelmed in summer and just could not be used in winter. Finding this unit online, I wasn't expecting much but it was advertised as being able to handle 24x7x365 operation (most portable units can't handle this amount of use, let alone reach the required temperature--I've a had some of those fail which I just had to throw out) and it was relatively inexpensive. So I took a chance.
Anyway, that was October 2009 when I bought it and it has performed superbly and continues to do so as I write this review in May 2012. I've been running it mostly continuously since the day I bought it except for the odd 15 minute to 1 hour downtimes every quarter when I manually shut it down to clean out the filters and vacuum the dust bunnies out of the internal heat exchange vanes. It cools a 150 square foot home office down to 70 degrees that without it, would reach 95 degrees easy even in the middle of winter when it's below freezing outside and with the windows open. I ordered the extra ceiling vent unit to vent the unit out an air duct and installation was a snap. Cleaning the removable air filter is also a breeze. And maybe it's just the dry air in New York, NY, but I've never had to empty out the condensate tank (it has always been empty or has never filled up to the point where the automatic cutoff activates before evaporating by itself, not even during hot and humid summers).
My only quibbles are:
1. That the internal heat exchanger vanes are so hard to reach (they tend to clog up with dust bunnies and there's no easy way to open the casing). I had to get a narrow tube attachment to my vacuum cleaner to be able to clean them out to my satisfaction.
2. It's a bit noisy at a muted, low roar. But one can conduct a telephone conversation and watch a movie without it being too much of a strain on the ears.
I was so impressed with it that I got a client to install two of them along with ceiling vent kits for insanely hot internal network closets at their offices. They lowered the furnace-like 110 degree temperatures to 72 degrees overnight (I measured the before and after temperatures), saving all their very expensive (> $150,000 worth) networking equipment in there which was laboring under the intense heat load.
I cannot praise these units enough and I'm very difficult to please. These units truly work as advertised (a rare thing in this day and age when hype usually trumps reality).

One of the best 110 volt A/C units ever!

This works great for the upper level of the house. The first one had a rattle and Shawn in customer service got me a replacement right away. The second one has been running for 3 weeks now trouble free. This works better than the 12,000 BTU window unit that I put in last summer. I am so impressed by this unit that I am recommending them to my friends. Thank you Living Direct and Shawn for your service.

This unit really drops room temperture.

Date:July 27, 2011

This product exceeded my expectations. When set to 73 degrees it is too cold in my south facing kitchen on a 90 degree day. I have already reccommened this unit to several friends and I am about to order a second one. Purchased additional connectors and now have set ups using plexiglass for both kitchen and livingroom south facing casement windows. Used screen as template roto zip tool made cut outs simple and then attached connectors with silicon and screws. Really easy job except cost of plexiglass ( cost based on oil prices). If you have a hot room with casement windows this unit will cool you down.

RESEARCH PAYS OFF!!

Date:July 17, 2011

We had this unit installed in a newly enclosed screen room in the HOT Florida July. Our room is 21X21 which required the 14,000 btu. It is set at 80 degrees and works like a charm.
The noise level is tolerable even with seating less than 6ft away and would be unnoticeable if I moved the furniture further from the unit.
What a wonderful well constructed unit compared to those we have encountered.

Good Server Room AC

Date:June 13, 2011
Best Uses: Office/commercial cooling
I have had this installed for about two weeks. So far, easy install with ceiling kit, keeps room cool (68f), reasonably quiet, and no water drain!.
I have not yet had to empty condensation (I have checked tank, empty).
Server room with 10 computers plus two racks (1/3 full or so) about 220 sq ft.
I used the drop ceiling kit (APDK1) - it installed quickly and easily (9 ft ceiling).
Looks nice and works.

Excellent Unit for the $$

Date:July 27, 2010
Best Uses: Garage / Shed cooling, Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling, Office/commercial cooling, Kitchen cooling
I have a server room that is about 250 sq. feet and I needed a portable air conditioner, because the building we are in turns off the air every night and all weekend. I spent a ton of time researching this purchase, because I was very nervous about finding a unit that could cool this room well and did NOT require us to empty the excess water.
The room size it not huge (I know), but it's not just an empty room. This room has a computer rack with 10 Dell servers, two firewalls, 3 managed switches, and a few more 1U devices. This rack is like a small furnace and i knew that would be a lot to cool. Not to mention I noticed the room was over 90 degrees one weekend I finally installed a temp gauge when I suspected it was getting really hot whle we were gone over weekends. At that time I was still looking but when I opened that door and found it that hot - the research project became a very high priority.
I went online Sunday night and placed my order for the EdgeStar Server Cool 14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner based on my previous and lengthy research. I found reviews on several sites, but no one could beat the price with shipping from Compact Appliance. The unit shipped on Monday and with the priority shipping it arrived within two business days (to Illinois). I purchased a ceiling kit at the same time and both boxes arrived undamaged (thankfully - I was a little worried about that too).
We installed the ceiling kit and hooked up the air conditioner in less than an hour and had it running. During the day the room is already supplied with air conditioning, so it wasn't a solid test until the following weekend. However, even then the unit would really crank out the COLD air (to touch) when we turned it down beyond the current room temp (so no problems out of the box).
During the day the room stays exactly at 73 from the building air conditioning and at 5pm the temp starts climbing. Much to my relief - not this night - the temp stayed at 75 all night long (we had the EdgeStar set at 75). It kept up without a problem. It also handled the long weekend with no problem either (75 all weekend) when the previous weekend it was 92 degrees in that room! Very impressive.
It's been more than a month of everynight and weekends that this unit has kept the temp exactly at 75 as set - NO problems at all. Also, one of my biggest fears was the excess water - there is NONE. I haven't had to empty the unit or been warned about it being full. It truly is able to evaporate the water as advertised. I couldn't be happier!
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone!

Used in a server room

Date:April 4, 2012
Best Uses: Office/commercial cooling, Replacement Equipment
I replaced a SDT 10,000 BTU unit that kept the temperature of the room about 76 to 78 degrees. My original server room was much smaller. I knew I needed something beefier. I searched the reviews and specs and found what I needed for a reasonable price. I installed the new unit (which took about 30 minutes, including the drop ceiling kit) and during the install the temperature climbed to about 83. This unit lowered the room temperature to 75 in about 30 minutes. So far this product has met my cooling expectations for my server room with 7 dell servers, a San device, my computer, 6 UPS units, and myself. I have the temperature set on 70 degrees and the room stays between 71 and 72 degrees. The room size is 423.36 square feet with an 8 foot "hanging ceiling." I opted for the drop ceiling adapter kit and it works great. I find the automatic restart a vital requirement for whenever there is a power failure and your cooling system needs to restart once the power is restored. This always seems to happen on a weekend leaving your servers to fry if they aren't able to be cooled.

Great buy

Date:August 26, 2010
Best Uses: Garage / Shed cooling, Living Room cooling, Bed Room cooling, Efficiency / Studio cooling, Kitchen cooling
I have a sunroom built onto a once bedroom in the back of my house. The original owners did not have heat/AC ducts run to the sunroom so it gets impossibly hot during summer and affects the thermostat in the hallway so the rest of the house stays cold. This unit has been wonderful. It does not get "overpowered" by the heat and sun. The thermostat now keeps the rest of the house just where I want it. It's just a little noisy when trying to watch TV, so we just turn the volume up!

Works as Described - Good Product

Date:August 10, 2009
Pros: Cools the Whole Room, Easy Window Installation, Even Air Distribution, Accurate Temperature Controls, Easy To Install
Cons: Empty Water Reservoir
Installation was a breeze and we've been having very hot and humid days over the past few weeks. We are using this in a 500 square foot living room area and it cools it from 91 outside to around 75 inside. On cooler days - it can even cool more. It's a bit noisy - but then again it's a 14000 BTU air conditioner that works. After having it for about 2 weeks - we did get a flashing red light tell us it needs to have the water reservoir emptied - a bit of a bummer as we were told we'd have to live in New Orleans with 100% humidity for it to ever fill up. Not the end of the world - but we're going explore a drain hose and if not - just empty it every few weeks.

Seems to work ...

Date:July 15, 2009
Seems to work as advertised. Don't know about it's durability for use in a server room situation (24/7/365). A couple of things to note: (1) the auto restart feature is NOT because of a manual switch, but because the controller is battery operated (not battery backup). So, instead of worrying about power outages, you have to remember to change the battery. Not a great plan for a server room. (2) The extended warranty would have been nice, but it doesn't apply to business usage.

Be prepared to hook up a drain

Date:August 13, 2009
Pros: Quiet
Cons: Can't Install In My Window, Need to hook up a drain
Nice unit, but claims that it vents condensed water through exhaust cannot be substantiated.
I was forced to hook up a drain for the accumulating condensate because the unit shuts down when the pan fills.
Exhausted air seems to be completely dry, so perhaps my unit is defective??
